Macomb County Habitat For Humanity | Construction
Green Building
Macomb County Habitat for Humanity strives to construct and provide our partner families with environmentally friendly, simple, decent and affordable housing.
Each of our homes are Energy Star certified homes and exceed the minimum qualifications set by the EPA’s program guidelines
-
These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 IRC, and are typically 20-30% more efficient.
Energy Star certified homes include the following:
Energy Star Certified Homes
Efficient Produts
Efficient Heating and Cooling Equipment
High Performance Windows
Efficient Products
-
These are provided to all our homeowners through donations from Whirlpool Corporation.
Energy Star Rated Appliances
-
All of the windows we install are Energy Star Rated.
Energy Star Rated Windows
-
All furnaces we use have a 95% efficiency rating.
-
This significantly reduces the utility expenses of our partner families.
95% Efficient Furnace
Our advanced techniques are utilized in order to provide our partner families with the most efficient homes possible, while reducing the amount of materials needed and increasing the efficiency of the construction process.
Here are some of our advanced techniques:
Advanced Framing Techniques
Use of energy heels on all roof trusses
Engineered roof trusses
2’ on center stud spacing
2” X 6” exterior walls
-
R-5 insulation is installed on the outside of the damp proofing material typically installed on a home.
-
This results in a warmer foundation wall that carries a 10 year no leak guarantee.
Foundation Water Proofing
-
R-19 batt insulation is installed in the cavities or all exterior walls.
-
This reduces the amount of air infiltration into our completed homes.
R-19 Exterior Wall
Through the utilization of the extension on the heel portion of our trusses we are able to provide a R value of 49 between the R-13 value of the attic cavities and the continuous R value of 36.
The R value rating of 49 is followed by all attic scuttle holes covered with R-60 pillow type insulation and caulked into place.
R-49 Attic Insulation
In order to reduce the amount of air infiltration to the home, all of our homes receive an air and energy sealing package that includes the following:
Air and Energy Sealing
-
Caulking of bottom plate to sub-floor.
-
Use of expanding foam around all exterior windows and doors.
-
In large gaps, and around all wire penetrations to the electric boxes high expanding foam is used.
-
All rim and band joist connections, including the foundation wall, are filled with expanding foam.
-
All paints and primers used in our home contain low or no volatile organic compounds.
-
By utilizing these paints and sealants, the air quality of the home is much greater in these new homes.
Low V.O.C. paints and sealants
-
Utilizing a tankless water heater, we save our family partners hundreds of dollars on an annual basis due to a reduction in heating water when it is unnecessary.
Our water heaters only heat as it is needed. Because of this, there is a significant reduction in the amount of natural gas that is consumed heating water when it is not demanded.

We focus on reusing existing lots for the development of all our homes.
-
Through the re-use of existing lots, it allows MCHFH to reduce our environmental impact by not disturbing undeveloped areas.
Site Development
-
At MCHFH we understand that every inch counts in a home and our floor plans are designed to utilize every square inch of floor space.
-
Our designs reduce inaccessible areas or “dead areas”, which lower the heating costs of our partner families.
Efficient Floor Plans
-
MCHFH believes that material should never go to waste or end up in a landfill.
-
On all of our build sites we provide containers that allow all employees and volunteers to recycle any material possible.
-
The material is separated and taken to the appropriate places for it to be recycled or utilized at a future build site.
On-Site Recycling
With the help of independent Home Energy Raters, Energy Star builder partners choose the most appropriate energy-saving features for their homes. Additionally, raters conduct onsite testing and inspections to verify the energy efficiency measures, as well as insulation, air tightness, and duct sealing details.
All homes undergo 3rd party verification
