Macomb County Habitat For Humanity | Faith In Action
Partner Benefits
Everyone Benefits from a Faith In Action Partnership:
-
Habitat projects can help people see God at work outside the walls of the church.
-
Building together allows people to put their faith into action. Habitat becomes a living expression of Christian concern.
-
Habitat projects help a church fulfill its mission to minister to persons in need. The opportunity to work on a Habitat for Humanity house can attract new members and bring energy into a congregation.
-
Individuals experience spiritual growth and find new practical and leadership skills through their service to others.
Global Partners through Tithing
One of the values that Macomb County Habitat shares with our faith community is tithing; Macomb Habitat donates a portion of our unrestricted cash donations to further Habitat's work in other countries. The concept follows an ancient Biblical tradition in which God asked Israel to sacrifice the first crops of the harvest, trusting that the remainder would be enough to carry them throughout the rest of the year. In exchange for this act of faith was a promise of provision: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it" (Malachi 3:10).
This promise, as well as Jesus' instructions to care for our neighbors and the vulnerable in society, makes tithing a natural component of Habitat's Christian identity. In essence, it is an act of faith. The Israelites trusted God to provide rain and sun, crops and livestock; Habitat trusts God to provide--through tithe partners--shovels and cement, nails and lumber.
Habitat operates in over 80 countries around the world, and together we have built over 400,000 homes. Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity International, Macomb Habitat has helped build over 130 homes for families in need around the world. We have provided funds for homes along our own country’s Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, in Honduras, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Romania, and with our newest partner, Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
Global Village Trips
Habitat for Humanity International’s Global Village trips offer participants the unique perspective on another part of our world. Team members work alongside members of the host community and get to know another culture in a way very few can. Trips are available to over 60 different countries and to our Gulf Coast.
Global Village volunteers have the opportunity to participate in local cultural activities, help raise awareness of the burden of poverty housing and, of course, further Habitat’s mission to build decent, affordable housing worldwide. As partners, team members help build a true global village of love, homes, communities and hope!
Teams can be all from one group, one church, or can be selected from across the world. Participants pay their own way to their destination, for the expenses while in the country and provide a donation to the local Habitat affiliate to help with their efforts. Details on available trips, fees and other information are available at habitat.org, under “Where We Build” and “Global Village”.
Another way to travel - As part of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ partnership with Habitat, their Thrivent Builds Worldwide program includes sponsorship for trips to selected communities in our Gulf Coast, El Salvador, Guatemala and elsewhere. More details on Thriventbuilds.com are under “Worldwide Trips”, or through the Global Village pages of habitat.org mentioned above.
